Chapter 6
Liam
2 Days Later
Jonathan has only been gone for an hour, and Iâm already wishing that he didnât leave. Not because Iâve set up a dinner date for when he comes home and my patience is wearing thin. But because there is pounding on our front door, and a familiar voice screaming for me to open up. Well, for Jonathan to open up.
I take out my phone, considering calling 911, but decide to text my boyfriend first. The yelling is slurred, and it's likely that heâs just confused, right?
Liam: Hurry back. My missing father has returned and heâs banging really hard on the door.
Liam: He sounds drunk.
My phone pings almost immediately.
Jonathan: Do NOT let him in. Iâll be home in five minutes.
I sigh shakily, looking at the text. A bubble of unease sinks in, but Jonathan never lies. If he says that heâll be here in five minutes, he means it. Seconds later, as Iâm typing a reply, wood splinters and glass shatters. Heâs kicked down the front door, storming into the house screaming mad.
âJonathan!â He looks around frantically, somehow missing me in his sight. âJonathan you son of a bitch!â he yells. âWhere the fuck are you!?â
âHeâs not here,â I say firmly, getting his attention.
âLiam?â His voice lowers, and his bloodshot eyes fall to me. He looks like shit. Like me if I aged twenty years and let myself go entirely. âWhat are you doing here?â
âI live here,â I reply, dumbfounded. âWhat are you doing here?â
Angered, he doesnât answer. âWhereâs Jonathan?â
âNot home.â
His eyes flick over my shoulder, finding the roses on the table. âAre you on a date?â
âIâm going to be,â I say carefully. âSoon. So, Iâd appreciate it if you left before he gets here.â
A dangerous realization flashes over his features. âItâs you,â he seethes. âYouâre the reason he sent me papers. Youâre the man heâs divorcing me for.â
âIf heâs divorcing you, itâs probably because you abandoned us. Iâm no expert in romantic spats, but that seems like the logical explanation to me.â
âOh youâre so fucking delusional, arenât you?â He throws his head back in a broken laugh. âYou actually think he loves you or something, donât you? Heâs nearly twice your age, you naive boy. Youâre just a fucking body to him.â
Now itâs my turn to laugh, even if Iâm undeniably frightened. âIs that supposed to hurt me? You donât know anything about us. About me. I pursued him.â
Rage builds, and his face turns red. He attempts to move closer, and I step back causing him to pause. âYou think you can just take him, donât you? You canât.â
âI already have,â I argue. âSo why donât you find someone else to fund your life. Thatâs why you want to be his husband anyway, isnât it? Money?â Jonathan not only comes from money, but he makes a lot of it as a successful coach. Itâs the motivation that makes the most sense to me, without love at play. And my father clearly feels no real love for my Jonathan.
